The Fethead Phantom is a condenser microphone preamplifier from Triton Audio. It allows you to amplify the signal from a microphone to a recorder while passing phantom power. There are many signal amplifiers on the market, but most are designed for dynamic microphones. The Triton Fethead Phantom is one of the few on the market that allows phantom power to pass to the microphone while being very portable.

The unit provides 18dB of gain, and the signal quality it produces is very clean, with no significant artifacts. I mainly use it when using my Zoom H series recorders, which have slightly noisier preamps than the F series or Sound Devices.

The unit supports frequencies from 30Hz to 100kHz, 24V or 48V power, and has a balanced XLR connection.

The Fethead Phantom is a very compact preamplifier that allows you to:

  • Improve the sound quality of condenser microphones by increasing their signal level.

  • Use condenser microphones with recorders that do not have phantom power.

  • Reduce background noise by moving the microphone away from the sound source.

The Fethead Phantom is an excellent choice for field recording, especially if you are working with recorders that have noisy preamps and want to capture soft sounds. It can significantly improve the sound quality of your recordings. Its small size and light weight make it a practical tool to carry in your bag.
